HOWARD COUNTY TENNIS PATRONS ANNOUNCE APPROVAL
OF LAND LEASE FOR TROY PARK TENNIS AND SPORTS CENTER
At the legislative meeting of the Howard County Council on July 29, 2010, the lease between Howard County and the Howard County Tennis Patrons for 14 acres at Troy Hill Regional Park in Elkridge, Maryland, was approved. It is expected that Howard County Executive Ken Ulman, on behalf of Howard County, and Art Tollick, President of Howard County Tennis Patrons, will sign the lease on August 2.
The lease paves the way for the development of Troy Hill Tennis and Sports Center in Troy Hill Park, located in the northeast corner of the crossroads of I-95 and Route 100, a parcel long planned for a regional park that will serve Elkridge and other communities in eastern Howard County. In testimony before the Howard County Council on July 19, 2010, the construction of the tennis complex was seen as a way to kick-start the construction of the rest of the Park.
This premier facility will be a world-class sports destination, with 30 indoor and outdoor tennis courts, a unique indoor exhibition venue, and an 8,000 seat multi-use stadium. The Center will not only cultivate fitness, health, education and a sense of community, it will also be an economic engine, anticipated to bring $18 million per year in direct economic impact on the Howard County economy, including as many as 29,000 new hotel nights.
It’s central location in the highest-income and fourth largest metropolitan area in the United States is ideal for a major sports venue.
The 2011Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Calendar released this month announces the Troy Park Women’s Tennis Championships to be held in Elkridge, MD on July 25, 2011. The Center has plans to attract a variety of local, state, regional, collegiate, and professional spectator events. Locally, the Center will be available for community sports and educational programs sponsored by or in cooperation with Howard County, and will help enhance and promote the health and quality of life for the citizens of Howard County.
The Howard County Tennis Patrons are working closely with the Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks to design this sports destination in concert with the rest of the plans for Troy Park. The tennis and sports facility will be constructed using private funds. HCTP is negotiating with several major companies about naming rights and are selling box suites and seat licenses. The Center will bring financial benefits to businesses in Howard County, particularly in Elkridge and the Route 1 corridor and to Howard County Government through rent payments over the term of the lease.
HCTP is a nonprofit corporation formed in 2004 to promote the growth of tennis in Howard County. With a vision to put a tennis racquet in every hand and provide the opportunity to keep it there for a lifetime, HCTP plans to include a full menu of quality programming for children and adults and to host USTA events.
